We are Premier Climate Care, a professional HVAC company, serving Monmouth and Ocean counties and the Shore communities. If you are finding your heating and cooling bills are high but you are never really comfortable in your home because it’s either too hot or too cold, you might find the solution in a new thermostat.

If your thermostat is malfunctioning it could be turning on too soon, or too late to maintain a comfortable temperature. If you decide to go for a new thermostat you should consider a programmable one. Here is a list of reasons to consider a programmable thermostat.

Energy Savings

  • Because you can program your thermostat to shut off when you are not home you never have to worry about forgetting to turn it down, or up, when you leave the house for hours. If you leave it running while you are not home you are cooling or heating your home for no reason, basically just burning money.

Convenience

  • It is so nice to come home to a warm house in the winter and cool house in the summer! With a programmable thermostat, you can set it to turn on say, a half hour or an hour before you are scheduled to get home so you don’t have to be uncomfortable while the heating and cooling reaches your desired temperature.
  • You can even program it to follow a different schedule for the weekends and for different zones of the house with some systems.

We’ve got some down right cold nights to get through as we slog our way to springtime. HVAC systems will be put through their paces. We all thought that winter weather might miss us this year, but no, it’s upon us with a vengeance. We are Premier Climate Care, a top-quality HVAC contractor. Get the Most Out of Your Heat Pump

  • If your home is heated solely through the use of a heat pump you may notice that it has a tough time keeping up with the cold on the nights to come, or days if the temperature stays below 35. The plain fact is that heat pumps can’t keep up. They are not designed to work in extreme cold. There are some things you can do to optimize the output of your heat pump.
  • One of the easiest things you can do is from the warmth of your home. Change your filters regularly. You usually can change them about once a quarter, so four times a year. However, if you have cats, dogs, or live near something that kicks up a lot of dirt, like a farm, you may want to change them more often. When your air filter is clogged it has the effect of slowing down the airflow through them, making the heat pump work harder to pump the air. Changing your filter frequently decreased the friction and lets the heat pump work efficiently. This will result not only in better airflow but also lower utility bills.

One problem we see a lot of during winter storms is faulty defrost cycles. A heat pump works by blowing air across a coil that has refrigerant in it. When it is cold out, the coil is colder than the air surrounding it. Air is forced through the coil, transferring the heat to the coil. This works great until the outdoor temperature is below 35, then the heat pump struggles. Every heat pump goes through defrost cycles to keep the coils from freezing up. The heat pump reverses direction and warms up the coils to melt any frost or ice off of them. If you find that your heat pump seems to not work well for periods of time during cold weather, this is what’s happening. When the defrost cycle is done, your heat pump will go back to work trying to heat your home.

Trouble happens when this cycle either doesn’t’ happen or isn’t working efficiently and ice builds up on the coils. This can happen during a blizzard or ice storm when the environment is adding ice or snow to the load that the defrost cycle is working to clear. When this happens your heat pump will fail to heat your home.

If you haven’t yet heard (and we find that highly unlikely), there is a big storm coming! Winter Storm Jonas looks like it’s going to pack a wallop! They say it may rival the storms of 2010 and wasn’t that a year to remember. We called it Snowpocalypse and it caught some people unprepared. Don’t let that happen to you this time. Read our tips for preparing for the big storm.

Preparing for a storm and a power outage

  • Get enough food and water for three days (more if you live in a remote area). Get food you can prepare and eat without heating it up, or cooking it at all. Bread and peanut butter and jelly are always good to have, especially if you’ve got kids to feed. You can prepare dishes like chicken and rice ahead of time, place them in ziplock baggies and freeze them. What great about those is that you can always eat them after the power comes back on.
  • Charge your rechargeable flashlights Stock up on batteries for all the flashlights and radios.
  • Charge your phone fully and consider buying either a power bank or a hand-cranked radio that has phone charging capabilities.
  • Bring in winter tools. If you have the shovel on standby inside your front door, you can shovel your way out instead of having to troop through the snow to get it.
  • Prepare a secondary source of heat. If you have a generator, get it ready for service. If you plan on using a kerosene heater, pick up some extra units of kerosene and make sure the heater is working well. If you have to use it, be sure to gather everyone in the house in one room and shut the doors so you can actually feel the heat.

In our last blog we discussed how changing your filters in your heating and cooling system on a regular basis can maximize their efficiency. We’ll go over some other tips in this week’s blog. We are Premier Climate Care, based out of Farmingdale NJ, and serving Monmouth and Ocean Counties and the Shore areas. We offer heating and cooling repair as well as installation when you need to replace an old unit.

Anyone who has survived even one winter of a Nor’Easter can tell you there will be power outages. No matter how prepared you are, you may end up waiting for the utility company to make their way down the shore to your area. We all know they are work as fast as they can.

If you have an older heat pump and the the electricity has been out for more than a half hour, set the thermostat to the emergency heat setting. This will allow your heat pump to work in this setting once the electricity comes back on. This allows the coolant to be warmed up by the compressor before forcing it to heat the house. In newer units this is automatic. You should leave it on emergency heating setting for 6-8 hours before you put it back to the normal setting. If you have a Carrier unit, they suggest that you leave it in emergency setting for a time equal to the time of the outage.

Geothermal

Geothermal heating and cooling works by utilizing the constant temperature that can be found five feet below the surface. In our area of the country, 53 degrees is the temperature at this depth. During the winter, the circulating water (or refrigerant depending on the type of system you have) absorbs this constant heat and delivers it to the home. In the summer, the reverse is true. The geothermal system takes water warmed by the hot air in your home, delivers it to the cooler earth, and thus cools your home.

How effective your geothermal system works depends on the constancy of the temperature of the earth. Factors that can affect this temperature include, the moisture content of the soil, air temperature, soil type, and plant life at the surface. One the system has been installed you will face the lowest heating and cooling bills of your life. Yes, the installation price is an investment but the Federal government and many states offer tax breaks and other incentives to install environmentally friendly systems like geothermal.
